Our People

UMS truly believes its people are its biggest asset. UMS' parent company, Turriff, was one of the first contractors in Scotland to achieve Investor in People (IIP) status and UMS has adopted the same policies, procedures and practices to ensure its workforce has the opportunity to realise its full potential.

As with any asset, investment is required to maintain peak performance. In 2006 the Turriff Group delivered over 5,000 technical training days to employees by means of internal and external training providers. Skills and knowledge alone, however, are only part of the picture. UMS has invested heavily in modern specialist equipment and tools to allow its people to put theory into practice. UMS owns and services an extensive fleet of specialist plant including directional drilling rigs, suction and vacuum excavators and chain trenchers.

UMS makes extensive use of the Turriff Group's bespoke training facilities located in Falkirk and Aberdeen. From extensive induction training, through implementation of the 'Turriff Innovations' programme, to continuous site-based refreshers, UMS takes the issue of health and safety extremely seriously. The safety of its workforce is one of UMS' core values, and we firmly believe that a robust safety culture contributes to a motivated and productive workforce.

Turriff Innovations - Case Study

UMS provides extensive induction training for every new starter - however junior or senior they may be. No amount of training, however, can fully prepare new employees for the complete range of activities on site.

Under the Turriff Group's Innovations scheme, UMS has introduced the 'Red Hat' initiative. All new employees wear red hard hats on site so that existing employees can provide support and assistance. It's a simple but highly effective idea which reinforces UMS' site safety culture.
